The mind – body connection means that our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our biological functioning. In other words, our minds can affect how healthy our bodies are.

At the same time, what we do with our physical bodies (what we eat, how we exercise, even our posture) can impact our mental state – again both positively or negatively. 

The organs in the body and all the emotional responses we have share a common chemical language and are constantly communicating with one another but in two different languages. The first being the language of thought that speaks the words and the other being language of emotional experiences that communicates through physical sensations.

We would like to believe that the language of thought controls everything, both our thoughts and behaviour. The reality is that, if anything, emotions influence both our thoughts and behaviour.

When an emotion is triggered in the brain it sends a series of impulses all over the brain and body. Physically, each emotion contains a programme that causes a very specific psychological change that ready us for action.

For example, when you feel sad, your body feels heavy like it’s weighted. When you are ashamed, your body will feel like it’s shrinking and you curl inwards.  When you’re excited, your body feels bouncy and full of energy.  Each emotion good or bad feels totally different internally. At any given moment your body will tell you exactly where you are emotionally.

The connection to the mind, body and physical health is paramount, if you don’t release trauma you could suffer from digestive, nerve and immunity problems as well as interrupted sleep patterns. But removing your mind of internal conflict your body will naturally return to a state of balance.
